I'm taking this for a test-drive right now, and so far, I am really loving it!
Not only can you have multiple Twitter/Facebook account columns display side-by-side, but you can create groups of people that you follow, so that you can find and display those updates easily. I set up a group for friends and family, one for my Weight Watchers-related follows, one for coupons and shopping, one for geek stuff, etc.
If you've used Twhirl, Seesmic Desktop takes it to the next level. It's really easy to set up and use, and you can display multiple account columns across your page by clicking on the "Detach" button. The only down-side for me so far is the inability to change the color scheme, but that's a "me" issue.

When Seesmic Desktop first launched we thought it had great potential to be a threat to TweetDeck. Then after adding Facebook integration, we were convinced that it was indeed a fierce rival.
Now, just a few short weeks later, Seesmic Desktop has released yet another update, and we remain impressed. The update, available now, fixes a few minor bugs, but adds in some key features we’ve been craving: Facebook commenting, Twitterspam reporting, additional image options, spellcheck, and even Tweetshrink support to auto-condense 140 plus character updates.

I have a number of issues with Seesmic Dekstop.
1. You can't minimize it to the system tray.
2. The update popup only say "You have x updates", whereas Twhirl shows you the tweet itself.
3. Search results are not integrated into the home stream, as in Twhirl.
4. It's pretty hard on the eyes, especially in comparison to Twhirl.
If they fix those we get the perfect Twitter client.
Interesting. I totally agree with you on #1. I can go either way on the update pop-up. When I'm logged in with multiple accounts, getting an individual notification for each update can get distracting and annoying after a while.
What I like about Seesmic is that you can see all your accounts on one screen. Twhirl, unless I'm missing something (and that's entirely possible) reguires a separate "window" for each account, and you have to hide/open each one individually. Twhirl definitely has a lot of advantages, including being more visually pleasing, and the ability to change the color scheme.
I actually like the search results separate, and the ability to save them or not as a separate stream. I LOVE the groups feature!
